Britain’s Guardian Unlimited launched Guardian America recently, a U.S. portal for news written about America, by Brits (mostly).
I was checking it out the other day and came upon something that surprised me. Check out this screenshot of Guardian America’s frontpage:
Did you see it? Lemme zoom in some:
This raised a few questions for me because, to be honest, I’m not used to seeing the word “nigger” in print, or online for that matter. I understand that Brits are less worried about race issues and Guardian is, in general, pretty liberal with sex and cursing, but do you think we could have seen this in the U.S.?
I don’t know (and haven’t found, yet) any overviews of how different U.S. papers handle cursing but I’d bet you’d be hard pressed to find any that would print the word “nigger,” especially on it’s front page, first story.
Am I wrong? I’m going to research this some and try to find a resource that discusses cursing in the media. Also, I may try to pin down my views on the matter. (Probably a good idea.)
